3D TV in Trouble?

I was very interested to come across an article from the BBC across in the Great Britain which mooted the outlook for 3D TV was not looking good. To be honest (you have to with the BBC), they did provide you with some compelling if rather diverse opinions. Initially I need to say that they talked about 3D in its entirety (including cinema and gaming as well) and not just 3D TV. Nonetheless, the fallout was definitely not hopeful!

Merely two years ago, when Avatar hit the movie screens, filmgoers viewed 78% of their movies in the U.K in 3D. The figures for the last six months show that figure down to just 40%. All and sundry thought Avatar was the true beginning for 3D. I’ll admit I only saw the 3D edition on TV but, I was massively impressed. The BBC then attempted to support this line of reasoning up by mentioning that Nintendo have reduced the price of the 3DS by £100 in Great Britain. That’s as maybe, but, in my estimation, this is a totally different market. You just can’t make a comparison at all.

On thing that is worrying though is slow sales of 3D TV sets across Great Britain. Undoubtedly we are seeing our sales stats well behind in the U.S too. Undoubtedly Europe has horrible monetary troubles again with the state of affairs in the Eurozone. There exists no question the U.K is being held back by Europe economically. And, certainly, we have our own well documented economic problems here as well. Howerver is that the possible origin of the drop in 3D TV sales?

A research project from Cal State is also quoted saying. “People who watch 3D TV are three times more likely to suffer from headache, eye strain or blurred vision”. Yet again, my own experience indicates that is just not the situation. However, I don’t at this time have a 3D TV myself, so I haven’t watched 3D programming night after night.

In addition, the reality is that there is still relatively little 3D content perhaps makes such findings a little unnecessary. Okay you may get a headache if you stare at 3D TV for 12 hours uninterrupted. Howerver I would suggest you would probably get the identical headache from 12 hours watching regular TV or game play. In this instance like is not being compared to like.

An alternative suggestion which I tend to agree with is that 3D is not quite right until now and that there was always going to be a lessening of interest after the initial demand was satisfied. A Guy named Chris Park from Vision 3 in the U.K (they advise the film industry on things 3D) has confirmed he believes not even motion pictures like Avatar got 3D “right”.

He goes on to say that, in his opinion, 3D has not been applied to anyplace near to its full potential. Possibly this is true and news coming from the making on the new Scorsese movie Hugo suggest that Martin has taken 3D to a new level.

Ben Kingsley stars and has gone out of his way to heap superlatives on Scorcese’s use of 3D. I have heard rumors of amazing new approaches for instance standing you in effect “in” a crowded area.

So, is 3D on the wane? I don’t think so, it’s simply taking a rest whilst the next wave of buyers take stock of the 3D TV scene so far.

Coming from the U.K, I still keep a watch on what takes place “at home” and I was astonished to see a BBC critique that suggested 3D TV is on the way out And, they expunded some pretty remarkable, if somewhat varied statistics to corroborate their case. The very first thing I will reveal is that the article suggested it was 3D generally (so including cinema, games and TV) as opposed to merely 3D TV. Despite that I was genuinely disappointed in what they had to say.
